High-performance cover to protect extremely heavily loaded lines like jibsheets and running backstays
Use the PBO cover on places where a standard cover is no longer sufficient. This cover has been developed for extremely high loads from winches and jammers. It is made of PBO, Technora® and Cordura® fibres and offers first-class heat protection and abrasion resistance. The PBO cover is used in combination with a core of HMPE super fibres, which can take high loads but need protection from the tremendous wear and friction of winches and clutches.
The PBO cover has a balanced mix of PBO, Technora® and Cordura® fibres. This makes for an extremely abrasion-resistant cover that also has plenty of grip. This makes the cover ideal for jibs or running backstays on high-performance yachts. he high loads are absorbed by the PBO cover, which extends the life span of the ropes. A PBO-covered rope remains round and flexible. This is due to heat resistance and abrasion resistance of the fibre.
For what do I use a PBO cover?
Ropes with a PBO cover are used at heavily loaded applications. Which are often also still loaded in the same place by a winch or clutch. Often such halyards and sheets have a Stirotex® or Dyneema® core that can sustain high loads. The PBO cover ensures that the sheet performs well on the winch or stopper regardless of the high loads. This allows a sail to deliver ultimate performance. Some examples where a PBO cover is used are:
- Running backstays operated via a winch - Running backstays are used to bend the mast and tension forestay. The range in which trimming is done is often relatively small and the forces are quite significant.
- Genoa sheets for high performance racing boats - When sailing downwind, headsails are often trimmed the in the same position. This requires ropes with high breaking strength and low stretch, preferably made of Dyneema® or Stirotex®. To ensure that the ropes continue to perform optimally around the winch, you need an extremely hard-wearing and heat-resistant cover. This is what PBO-Cover does extremely well.
What are the advantages of the material mix of PBO, Technora® and Cordura® fibres for the cover?
Technora® fibres are characterized by their enormous abrasion-resistance, while PBO has topnotch heat-resistance. Cordura® fibres offer extra grip. The balanced mix of the three fibres makes the PBO Cover the perfect cover for sheets and halyards.
What is the best way to use the PBO cover?
The PBO cover can be used to protect a core of Stirotex® or Dyneema®. This allows you to create a rope that can be used under extreme conditions. The PBO cover is spliced over a core, giving you a halyard or sheet characterized by its high heat resistance and extreme abrasion resistance. The sheath increases the diameter of the rope by about 2-3 mm, see table below. Premiumropes offers the PBO cover in two sizes, for core diameters from 6 mm to 8 mm and from 8 mm to 12 mm. Here you can make ropes with an end diameter of ø8mm to ø14mm.
